Sydneysiders are being warned of traffic challenges over the Christmas period as Transport for NSW announces vital roadworks, impacting the Warringah Freeway Upgrade and traditional congestion hotspots like the Sydney Fish Markets, Sydney Airport, and Christmas shopping precincts.

Throughout the quieter summer holiday period, road crews will work on the Warringah Freeway Upgrade, focusing on critical tasks such as building new overpass bridge piers, installing a new bus on-ramp, and demolishing old retaining walls and drainage structures.

The construction, slated from Boxing Day to 26 January 2024, will involve multiple temporary lane closures, but will save the equivalent of 70 standard night shifts throughout the year and six weekend shutdowns when work goes 56 hours straight.

While the holiday season typically sees reduced traffic, commuters are warned to expect delays on the Warringah Freeway. Motorists are urged to plan ahead, considering additional journey time and, for air travellers, accounting for changed traffic conditions around Sydney Airport and Sydney Gateway.

Adding to the traffic mix is the annual Sydney Fish Market’s 36-hour seafood marathon, attracting over 100,000 visitors.

Minister for Roads John Graham said the works are planned specifically for a time of the year when traffic would usually be lower.

“But we need to be very clear that this will mean delays,” Mr Graham said. “In fact, travel times are expected to resemble peak times on the Warringah Freeway at certain times based on the forecasts of Transport for NSW.”
