‘Danger to riders and schoolchildren’
More than 80 people have made submissions of concern about Flower Power’s $14 million expansion in Terrey Hills.
The majority of submissions were not opposed to the 62 Myoora Road development, but expressed concern about the proposed access points. One is on Myoora Road opposite Terrey Hills Public School. The second is on Cooyong Road, which locals say will affect riders using the community bridle and walking trail (CBT).
The plan is to close the Mona Vale Road entrance and retain the current entry/exit at the eastern end of Cooyong Road, while establishing another towards the west end of the road.
Flower Power is proposing new buildings, with space for a fruit shop, pet shop, landscaping shop, extra parking and new café area.
David Harris, secretary of the Duffys Forest Residents Association (DFRA), expressed concern about safety.
“We have no objections to Flower Power extending,” Mr Harris told Peninsula Living Pittwater said. “But we have concerns about the exits.”
“In collaboration with council, we’ve been helping revitalise the community bridle and walking trail which runs right alongside Flower Power on Cooyong Road. So an exit there will create problems for horse riders.
“And an exit onto Myoora Road will be right opposite the school. Myoora Road’s already a very busy and difficult road with many new developments. It’s a very narrow and dangerous road and this will make it even worse. We think the Mona Vale Road entrance is essential.”
Pittwater ward councillor Michael Gencher told Peninsula Living Pittwater that some of his colleagues did not recognise the area’s significance to the community.
“This is a very special area with incredible values and the equestrian community has been there for over 50 years,” Mr Gencher said. “We’re seeing something iconic potentially being sacrificed for an entry and an exit point to a large development.
“This will cause a lot more stress and real concern in the community for safety,” he added.
The proposal has been referred to the Northern Beaches Local Planning Panel.
