Rates regulator IPART is asking the North Sydney community for feedback on council’s proposed 52% rate rise.

Following North Sydney Council’s extraordinary meeting in January, where council voted to put a three-year, staggered, cumulative special rate variation (SRV) to IPART for approval, community consultation is now being undertaken. The consultation period runs until Monday 9 March, with both a five-minute survey and submission portal available on the IPART website.

“Community feedback is an important part of the tribunal’s assessment of special variation applications,” IPART said in its announcement. “We encourage ratepayers and community members to fill out the survey on the IPART website or lodge a submission.”

Previously, IPART had criticised North Sydney Council in its previous attempt to raise rates by 87%, saying it had not clearly informed the community why it needed the SRV. The new SRV, proposed after the criticisms, would have a staggered introduction, rising 23% from July 2026, 14% from 2027 and 8% from 2028. The average increase would be $452 over three years.
