NSW Government announced the Beaches Link and Gore Hill freeway Connection has been placed on hold and the property acquisitions for the project will be stopped.
While a detailed Environmental Impact Statement has been completed for the Beaches Link project, the NSW Government has not granted its planning approval, and that process will not proceed at this time.
The Government has said it will continue to construct the Western Harbour Tunnel and Warringah Freeway Upgrade.
Member for Pittwater Rory Amon slammed the decision as the project was set to significantly reduce travel times and congestion for local commuters.
“The former Liberal Government had invested over $100 million on the complex technical and environmental planning and approval processes, and property acquisitions and was committed to delivering the project. The last time Labor was in power, there was NIL investment in our local roads, public transport, schools, or hospitals – they even closed a high school and a TAFE.”
According to Transport for NSW documents, the Beaches Link would have reduced the travel time by 2037 up to 38 minutes from Balgowlah to Sydney CBD; 56 minutes from Dee Why to Sydney Airport; 54 minutes from Frenchs Forest to Rozelle; 32 minutes from Manly to Macquarie Park.
The documents also forecast a reduction in traffic on Spit Road by up to 33 per cent; Warringah Road by up to 23 per cent; Eastern Valley Way by up to 40percent; Military Road by up to 11 per cent; and Mona Vale Road by up to 8 per cent.
