Artist and illustrator Nina Maskiell, the recipient of Northern Beaches Council’s Emerging Curator Program, will present her exhibition, Soft Weather at Curl Curl Creative Space from 1 to 11 October.
The Emerging Curator Program, launched in 2023, funds an early-career curator to produce and curate a group exhibition with support from council’s arts specialists and mentorship from the curators at Manly Art Gallery & Museum.
Nina is an artist, illustrator and emerging curator working at the intersections of art, design and ecology, discovering the connections between humans and the natural world, and how art can reshape our understanding of these relationships.
The exhibition, Soft Weather, brings together eight Sydney-based artists working across painting, photography, ceramics, installation and mixed media.
Soft Weather invites the public to explore the ever-changing conditions of our environment not as a passive backdrop to human experience, but as an active force that shapes how we move through and understand the world around us.
Mayor Sue Heins said the emerging curators develop their practice, gain knowledge of the arts sector, and grow their professional networks. “Council is proud to support the Emerging Curator Program, which provides early-career curators with the mentorship, experience and industry connections needed to build successful careers,” Mayor Heins says.
“By investing in emerging creative talent, we are helping to strengthen our cultural sector and create opportunities for the next generation of arts leaders.
“This exhibition encourages audiences to reflect on their personal relationship with their surroundings and how unseen forces such as weather, air, light and sound shape the way we experience the world.
“Many of the artists in the exhibition draw inspiration from the Northern Beaches, making this local presentation a fitting reflection of their connection.”
The contributing artists in this exhibition include Allan Giddy, Charli Rose Gerry, Lisa Jones, Gabby Villalba, Julie Edgar, Suzanne Davey, Aurelia King and Susie Dureau.
The exhibition will also feature a hands-on workshop for primary school children aged seven to nine.
The exhibition will be open from Thursday 1 October to Sunday 11 October (closed Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 October) from 10am to 4pm.
