A man from Newport was among hundreds charged with domestic violence-related offences over the weekend in a statewide operation.

Operation Amarok X ran from Wednesday 14 May to Saturday, 17 May, and saw 627 individuals charged with more than 1300 offences.

The Domestic and Family Violence Command-led operation involved officers from each region’s Domestic Violence High Risk Offenders Team (DVHROT), along with specialist officers from Raptor Squad, Youth Command, State Crime Command’s Child Protection Register, Traffic & Highway Patrol Command, and the Police Transport Command.

One of the 627 charged was a Newport man. At about 9pm on Friday, officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command attended a Newport home after reports of an assault. A 45-year-old woman allegedly had her mobile phone smashed before being assaulted by her partner. A 33-year-old man was arrested and taken to Manly Police Station before being transferred to Northern Beaches Hospital for treatment. He was subsequently released and charged with intentionally choke a person without consent, two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and malicious damage. He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday.

Domestic and Family Violence Corporate Sponsor, Assistant Commissioner Peter Mckenna, said Amarok X had a focus on protecting young victims with officers from Youth Command attending schools and PCYCs to help educate and engage with young people.

“We know the psychological trauma caused by a child or young person, when they are exposed to domestic and family abuse, can have a lasting effect,” Assistant Commissioner Mckenna said.

“No one – and especially no child – should have to experience violence and should be safe in their own home.”
