Lovers of the classic 1989 Disney film The Little Mermaid will delight in the musical adaptation of the same name, set to grace the stage at The Concourse in Chatswood from 21 March. Featuring singing, dancing, special effects and glittering costumes, this PACA Production will take audiences on an adventure – both under and above the water!

It’s a story for all ages about Ariel, an adventurous mermaid princess who dreams of exploring the world beyond the sea. When she finds herself on land and falls in love with Prince Eric, Ariel is forced to grapple with the fact that mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans. The mermaid follows her heart and in doing so, makes a deal with an evil sea witch, putting her father’s crown in jeopardy.

Faith Sherwood takes on the role of Ariel, leading the audience on a journey of self-discovery. “Ariel is 16 and she’s the youngest of her mer-sisters,” Faith says of her character. “She’s so curious, she just wants to know more about the world around her.”

Faith, 23, was an ensemble member in the Willoughby Theatre Company’s 2019 production of Fiddler on the Roof; and played Mary Poppins in the Pymble Ladies College musical when she was in Year 11. She studied drama for the HSC and grew up singing and dancing.

Having taken on more formal characters in the past, Faith is keen to tap into Ariel’s spirited nature. “It’s been really cool to embrace more of the youthfulness and fun in (this) role.”

Faith, who lives on the North Shore, says the production has surprises in store. “It’s got big songs from the movie, like Part of Your World and Under the Sea, but then it’s got some really cool other songs that the audience wouldn’t have heard before because they’re new to the show,” she says.

Her transformation into a mermaid is made complete with costume, choreography and effects. “The costumes make a big difference to making us look like mermaids,” says Faith, who explains that she wears special flared tights in the show, giving her freedom to dance. “Then (when) I stand with my legs together, it looks like an actual tail.” The mermaids’ dance moves and the way they move their bodies also make them appear as though they are under the sea.

She credits the production crew with bringing the underwater scenes to life. “The stage managers have got a really awesome set coming together,” she says. “We’ll be able to show that contrast between under the sea and above the sea, when I get my shore legs as well.”

So whether your new to the story of The Little Mermaid, or you’re feeling nostalgic, Faith believes this is the musical to see. “It’s a show that’s going to appeal to all ages,” she says.
