North Shore Police have warned residents about understanding the safe use of e-bikes following a growing number of offences in the Area Command.
Police have stated that the incorrect use of e-bikes poses significant safety risks, with the main issue being the riding of e-bikes on footpaths. Police have reiterated that it is an offence, in general, to ride any bike on a footpath if you are not below the age of 16 or you are supervising someone under the age of 16.
North Shore Police are also trying to reinforce to the public what permitted types of e-bikes are. According to current legislation, legal e-bikes are power-assisted pedal cycles and electric power-assisted pedal cycles. Anything that is self-propelled and can travel over 25km an hour is considered illegal.
This comes as e-bike company LimeBike continues to expand into the northern Sydney area, with the local council expressing concerns about satfey to both locals and the environment.
North Shore Police are advising all e-bike owners to stay up to date about current regulations.
