North Sydney Council is offering a unique gift to new parents by providing them with a free tree to plant on their property to celebrate the birth of their baby.

This initiative aims to address the decline in tree canopy cover in the North Sydney local government area (LGA), which has decreased by 11.7 per cent since 2008. The program will initially run as a 12-month trial.

Parents can request a tree from the council’s website, and the chosen tree will be delivered to their door at no cost. The selection includes native trees from The Coal Loader nursery and exotic species like Jacarandas from a private nursery.

By planting these trees, families can watch them grow and educate their children about the beauty and benefits of nature. Additionally, it encourages private landowners, as over half of the North Sydney LGA is privately owned, to contribute to increasing the overall tree canopy cover and achieving the council’s target of 34.4 per cent by 2036.

The Trees for Newborns program adds ecological value, promotes native species, acts as a carbon sink, and enhances the aesthetics of North Sydney, making this a good opportunity to inspire people to plant trees on their properties and positively impact the local environment.
