Northern Beaches council is trialling a new pedestrian crossing system in high traffic areas across Manly that create an optical 3D illusion.

The three new pedestrian crossings can be found across two intersections at South Steyne Road and Wentworth Streets as well as Steyne Road near Victoria Parade and will stay on trial over Summer.

Council says it is always looking for new and innovative ways to improve pedestrian safety especially since research has shown 3D crossing can reduce speeds and improve public safety.

Previously implemented across locations around Europe and America, the idea of the illusion is to appear as if the crossing is rising up from the pavement, to slow motorists as they approach.

Driver, pedestrian and community behaviour will be assessed during the first six months of the trial to determine the crossing’s effectiveness and consider if they should be applied to other high pedestrian and vehicle traffic across the area.

The new crossings have been in effect since 7 November.
