Annual electricity costs across the Northern Beaches have been slashed since Northern Beaches council brought in its 100% renewable electricity Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

According to council, its last financial year saw a decrease in electricity costs for council buildings and sites by $321,690 and street lighting by $201,870.

Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan said these major savings were achieved through the PPA, improving energy efficiency and installing more solar panels on council properties, which has since reduced council’s corporate carbon emissions by a total of 20,000 tonnes.

“By investing in solar and switching to renewable energy, we have reduced our emissions by around 80 per cent,” Mayor Regan said.

Together, the solar installations on council properties and the PPA are expected to achieve savings of over $2.4 million over seven years.

Mayor Regan was also pleased to announce that council’s savings are going back into infrastructure upgrades and community projects across the Northern Beaches.
