North Sydney Council is seeking to reduce the rate of off-street parking

North Sydney Council is seeking community feedback on draft amendments to the North Sydney Development Control Plan 2013 (NSDCP 2013) which seeks to reduce the rate of off-street parking for new high-density residential developments.

Council says that there is a growing number of large-scale residential developments being proposed in the LGA and these often include a significant amount of on-site car-parking.

Council considers it a sensible policy move to manage off-street parking spaces through the adoption of updated maximum parking rates for future residential developments in areas of high public transport accessibility.

This includes parts of Crows Nest, St Leonards, North Sydney, Wollstonecraft, Lavender Bay, and Milsons Point.

The proposed amendments are in response to significant investments by the State Government towards improving public transport accessibility in North Sydney and align with the objectives of the Council’s adopted North Sydney Transport Strategy (NSTS).

Council state in the draft amendment that there are many benefits to limiting off-street parking for new developments. These include encouraging more sustainable use of public transport; increasing the capacity to create more people-focused and engaging environments; providing potential purchasers of new apartments with the option of purchasing an apartment without a parking space; and managing traffic generation and congestion on local roads.

“As our population grows and more people choose to live in these well-connected suburbs, now is the right time for Council to encourage reduced car use and dependence, which incorporates our sustainability goals,” Council states.

The draft DCP amendment is on public exhibition until Tuesday 13 December 2022. If you would like to make a submission, visit the North Sydney Council website.
